Huge Animatronic Spider Redux
Feb. 7th, 2009 03:43 pmIn September last year we went down into town on a very wet day to see La Princesse, the huge animatronic spider that invaded Liverpool for a week. We were up early to go down to the Albert Dock where the spider had ended up, having appeared on a tall building a few days before.
I was so excited, and it was all really cool, though the weather could have been better, to say the least: it started pouring with rain almost as soon as we got there, and it just got worse, plus the area was very narrow between buildings, and you couldn't see down past the sea of umbrellas and a few takeaway vans and various lighting rigs and stuff to do with the creature itself. Forest moved ahead of me in the pouring rain and I could see the top of the things legs and the people driving it but didn't really get an idea of the sheer size of the thing until we looked through the photos later - there were so many people I didn't even see the bit where it reared up on the building, except part reflected in a window, and I wasn't sure what all the fire and banging was about. Twas great to be there taking part in something weird and wonderful nonetheless, even if there wasn't as much to see as I'd hoped..
I got that soaked I didn't want to go down and see the rest of the events. In fact looking back through LJ I can't even find a post about it, suggesting I wasn't well enough to journal the event; that's been happening way too frequently of late, though I guess getting to *do* stuff is more important than being able to chat about it widely afterwards. I've never been so wet in my life (right through to the skin, I found when I hit the hot shower as soon as we got home), and after a wander round followed by a disappointing lunch, and then coffee and chocolate cake to make up for that (slurp!) we ended up back in the pouring rain trying to get a taxi. Which involved walking back into the city centre as all the taxi ranks were shut because of the spider being moved around - maybe its not surprising I didn't manage to post!
Forest put a pic in his journal mind (which is here) but despite hunting through various sites I didn't see that many great images at the time.
Fast forward to right now and I found a link to some amazing pictures online so thought I'd share, makes it look amazing! :)
